1:1 at Quaker Valley

In the spring of 2019, the Quaker Valley School Board approved the purchase of the iPad for all students in grades 6–12, and in April 2020 the District expanded its 1:1 initiative and approved the purchase of iPads for students in grades K-5. These two approvals by the School Board reconfirmed their commitment and continued support of a 1:1 digital learning environment for our students. This adoption of 1:1 technology will allow students equitable access to online and digital content   It is important for students to engage with the technology tools of their generation and learn good digital citizenship in a safe and responsible atmosphere. Using a mobile device in the classroom will allow students access to software and apps that will develop their creativity, improve their reading and writing skills, and encourage them to think critically as they spark new interests and gain valuable insights into their journey of being a lifelong learner. This transition to a mobile device environment allows each student to access a world of knowledge with a single touch and creates opportunities for individualized learning, increased student engagement, and the transformation of teaching practices.

The iPad was purposefully selected for its unique set of features:
  • Immediate access to digital and electronic resources in the classroom
  • Improved student management of work using Cloud storage (iCloud and Google Drive)
  • Access to a variety of easy to use productivity and curricular apps
  • Increase feedback and communication between student and teacher
  • Efficient classroom routines and practices
  • Improved student organization and management of school assignments
Because learning should not stop at the end of the school day, all students will be permitted to take their iPads home with them.

Policies

Quaker Valley encourages students to be accountable for their actions and to use technology resources responsibly and for educational purposes.  It is important that students and families understand the Quaker Valley School District's policies associated with technology use.  Students must follow the Code of Conduct and the Acceptable Use of Electronic Resources policy which is contained in the Code of Conduct.

During the distribution of devices to students at the start of each school year, students will receive information about the appropriate use of the iPad.  For questions about the QVSD Code of Conduct or Acceptable Use of Electronic Resources policy please contact your child's principal.

Best practices for the use and care of the iPad

  • Charging your iPad - Charge your iPad every night to prepare for the next day at school. Some students may find themselves using the iPad in every period and a full charge would be necessary. New Trier does not provide extra chargers or loaner iPads for students who forget their iPad or run out of battery.
  • Transporting your iPad - Keyboard cases can be separated into two parts the iPad and the keyboard. Students should always re-attach these two components to ensure that the keyboard and the iPad are protected. This will greatly reduce the likelihood of iPad and/or keyboard damage.
  • Personal Content on the iPad - The student must be aware that they are taking temporary possession and should not use the device for personal/and or private purposes.  Quaker Valley reserves the right to review, monitor, and restrict information stored on or transmitted via the device and to investigate inappropriate use of resources.
  • Caring for your iPad - Do not leave the iPad in places of extreme temperature, humidity, or limited ventilation (e.g. in a car) for an extended period of time. Keep food and beverages away from the device.
  • Securing your iPad - Middle School and High School students are required to secure their iPads with a Passcode. This 6-digit code protects students and their personal data. If your iPad is lost or stolen, notify the principal immediately.

Cleaning the iPad

Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my Apple product?
  •  Using a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces.
  • Don't use bleach.
