Service Learning Opportunities

Fern Hollow would like to invite students and/or their families to volunteer at the annual fall clean-up on Saturday, November 8th, from 9 am to noon. There is no need to sign up. You will be completing fall cleanup by mulching, planting, cleaning up the outdoor classroom, and much more. They will have pastries, coffee, juice, and water in the morning. 

Margot Bruno is the official MS teacher sponsor and is looking reliable HS students who might be interested in assisting with the program. Email Mrs. Keller at [email protected] if you are interested.

Role:  Volunteer Tech Assistant for Older Adults

Time commitment:  2 hours a week

Number needed: 3

Duties include: Being available at the Sewickley Valley YMCA to assist older adults with using technology during weekday, daytime hours. Helping older adults navigate phones, tablets and computers so that they are comfortable using the technology Helping older adults establish accounts on various websites or apps, and demonstrating how the sites work (such as Instacart to order groceries, or amazon to shop online) Assisting older adults in using connectivity apps like Zoom and FaceTime.

Volunteers are the heart of Genesis of Pittsburgh. Whether you’re organizing baby items, helping during parenting classes, or lending a hand behind the scenes, your time and compassion directly support pregnant women, children, and families in our community. No matter your skills or schedule, there’s a place for you here — and every hour you give makes a difference. One Saturday a month there is a volunteer day where an individual or group can come to our Center and help for a 2 hour time slot.  The Volunteer Application is available to complete on-line HERE.

The Allegheny County Park Rangers offer a unique blend of outdoor education and interactive learning programs for children of all ages, all year long! These programs are designed to introduce children to nature, wildlife, and conservation in a hands-on environment. The Park Rangers offer a variety of programs ranging from guided hikes in the woods to learn about the local plants and animals that call the parks home, to presentations and programs about the history of the parks, interactive demonstrations, and more! Right now, there are programs coming up where your family can learn about fireflies, check out beaver habitats, and explore streams. NHCO is a great way for high school students to get involved within their communities and to start earning volunteer service hours. It is suggested to avoid waiting until the end of the school year when most of NHCO’s opportunities are taken. Youth volunteer opportunities include: NHCO’s Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden in Bellevue, special events/fundraisers, food pantry cart runners (at pantries that do not serve within the youth volunteer’s school district), hold collections for NHCO’s food pantries and seasonal Sharing Projects, and grounds work and/or building maintenance at NHCO’s Allison Park office. Middle School teacher, Mr. Wolovich, is starting work on a sustainability project at the Sewickley Community Center. The project includes the development of a solar panel and energy efficiency plan to better support the Sewickley Food Pantry, along with exploring ways the center can better manage stormwater through a biodiversity study to establish a baseline of existing plant species.

Departments at Heritage Valley Health System utilize the service of volunteers. Donating their time and skills in a meaningful rewarding way, volunteers assist in meeting community health care needs by supporting staff efforts. By becoming part of the health system, volunteers also help to create and maintain in the community an understanding of Heritage Valley Health System and its services.  We recognize the desire for students to volunteer to learn more about health care as well as to obtain community service hours for school.  Students are welcome to apply for summer or semester positions.  If you would like to be considered for such a volunteer position, you must meet certain entry requirements: Minimum age is 15 years old (must have completed 9th grade), Completion of an application, Basic health clearance, Proof of COVID-19 vaccination, General and departmental orientation, including an emphasis on patient privacy, confidentiality, safety and customer service (provided).  Click HERE for more information and to apply.

If you’re between the ages of 14–18, volunteer with the science center for an experience in an environment like no other! Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, make some great friends, and earn references for your college application or your job hunt – all while giving back to the community.  We accept new teen volunteers twice annually: in Summer and during the School Year. Our departments have differing minimum commitments beginning at 50 hours for our Summer Teen volunteers and 100 hours for School Year Teen volunteers.  Click HERE for more info!
