The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) is proud to recognize the recipients of the 35th annual WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award, with 20 candidates (10 male, 10 female) selected from a group of 151 nominees.
Each winner is awarded a scholarship of $1,000 to attend the college of their choice. This year’s group brings the amount of scholarship money given by the WPIAL to its James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award recipients to $779,000 since 1992.
The 20 winners are listed below.
Emma Currier (Quaker Valley) – Emma Currier is an active member of the Quaker Valley community and dedicated student. Emma carries a 4.70 GPA.
While in high school, Emma has earned eight varsity letters across two sports, soccer and track & field, where she served as captain for each team during her senior year. Emma has been recognized as an All-Section soccer selection as a junior and senior and earned All-WPIAL honors as a senior.
Emma helped lead her team to a WPIAL soccer runner-up finish and a section championship. In track & field, she was a WPIAL finalist and PIAA state qualifier in the triple jump. She also established the second all-time indoor triple jump mark in Quaker Valley history.
In addition to her athletic pursuits, Emma is active in many extracurricular activities. Emma served for four years on Student Council, and following a rigorous selection process was named the Student Representative to the Quaker Valley School Board during her senior.
Emma spent many hours serving her community during high school, dedicating four years to Key Club and participating in the Quaker Valley MiniThon. Outside of school, Emma has volunteered for the Bethlehem Haven Women's Shelter through toiletry drives and auction fundraisers.
Next year, Emma plans to study business and sport management at the University of Florida.
