The Quaker Valley High School Math League Team just wrapped up a successful 2025-26 Season! The team won their section championship for the 8th consecutive year and recently finished as the 3rd Place Overall Team in Western PA for 2025-2026 at the MCWP (Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania) Team Finals that were conducted on April 20th at Trinity Christian School.
This year, Quaker Valley was represented at the Finals competition by the 5 “High Scorers” from the regular season competition. Those top scorers were Senior Emmanuel Bayne, Juniors Ruth Whitacre and Evelyn Zutter, Sophomore Lucy Montagnese, and Freshman Michal Fuener.
Math League is an interscholastic competition where students compete against other schools in a variety of individual and team rounds through 6 monthly competitions that run from October through March over the school year. Each monthly competition consists of 6 individual questions as well as 3 team questions. The questions touch on all types of mathematics within a high school curriculum (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, and PreCalculus).
Approximately 40 High Schools from all over Western Pennsylvania compete in the MCWP Math League. All competitions are done “by hand” without the use of any calculator or technological devices.
While the exact start date of Math League is unknown, teams have been competing since the 1980s in this extracurricular activity. Quaker Valley’s team is coached by QVHS Mathematics Teacher, Matt Welch. To find out more about QV’s Math League Team or join, you can email Mr. Welch at [email protected]
