About the Rankings

The U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools ranking is a comprehensive national evaluation of public high schools across the United States. Each year, nearly 24,000 schools are reviewed, with about 18,000 ranked based on multiple measures of student achievement and school quality. The goal of the ranking is to highlight how well schools prepare students for success beyond graduation, whether in college, career, or other postsecondary paths.

The rankings are based on six key indicators of performance:

  • College Readiness (30%) – Proportion of seniors who took and passed at least one Advanced Placement® (AP) or International Baccalaureate® (IB) exam.
  • College Curriculum Breadth (10%) – Recognizing access to and success in a wide range of AP/IB subjects.
  • State Assessment Proficiency (20%) – Measuring student performance on state-required tests in core subjects.
  • State Assessment Performance (20%) – Comparing actual student results to expectations based on demographics.
  • Underserved Student Performance (10%) – Focusing on outcomes for Black, Hispanic, and low-income students.
  • Graduation Rate (10%) – Measuring the proportion of students who graduate within four years.

This year’s rankings are based on data from the 2022–2023 school year.
