Quaker Valley Middle School Science Teacher, Mrs. Tracy Shaffer, is taking part in a NASA program called LiftOff in Houston, Texas. LiftOff was created for science teachers to learn and lecture about their experiences with STEM education through the lens of space. The theme for the program this year is Reach New Heights, Reveal the Unknown, Benefit all Humankind!
The goal of LiftOff is to not only return teachers back to their districts with new knowledge to use in their classroom, but to also inform other educators as well.
Teachers selected for this program met during the last week of June at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston to conduct experiments, tour facilities and network with other educators while sharing lesson plans and ideas.
Mrs. Shaffer says she had the chance to meet with astronauts Clayton Anderson and Fred Haise during her visit to Houston. They both shared about their work on various missions, such as Apollo 13. Shaffer presented to the crowd about thermodynamics and had the chance to visit the Neutral Buoyancy Lab.
