Two fifth grade teams, one from Edgeworth Elementary, and one from Osborne Elementary, competed in the STEM Design Challenge at Duquesne University on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. The STEM Design Challenge is an academic competition provided by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific. Students were challenged to use K’Nex building materials to create an environmentally-friendly product for the home.
The Edgeworth team members were Georgia Groom, Chloe Hanna, and Kwilai Karto who presented "The Movin' Mower". The Osborne team members were Jack Cindrich, Quinn Figley, Thomas Fuener, and Matthew Henry. They presented the "Eco Can". The Osborne team took second place among the 40 teams in their division.
The final products were judged by a group from Thermo Fisher Scientific on their design, their presentation, their blueprint, teamwork, and creativity. Awards were given to the top three teams in each division. The first-place team advances to the state competition in May.
