Our Portrait of a Learner defines the skills, habits, and mindsets all students need to thrive whether they are entering college, the workforce, or life in their communities.
At Quaker Valley, we believe education is more than preparing students for the next test; it’s about preparing them for life. To ensure that our students leave our schools ready to thrive in an ever-changing world, we have embarked on an exciting journey to create and adopt the Quaker Valley Portrait of a Learner.
The Portrait of a Learner defines the skills, mindsets, and qualities every Quaker Valley graduate should embody. It goes beyond academics, capturing the competencies that will help our students succeed in college, careers, and citizenship while also leading fulfilling and purposeful lives.
This process began in the Fall of 2024 with intentional collaboration. District leaders, teachers, students, families, local businesses, and nonprofit partners came together to reflect on one central question: What do we want for our students—both now and in the future? Through workshops, advisory meetings, school-based discussions, and community feedback we identified what matters most when considering our students' success.
The Portrait is not about creating something “extra.” Instead, it aligns what we already do best at Quaker Valley with the values of our community and the evolving needs of the world. It will serve as a blueprint for teaching and learning as it guides classroom experiences and shapes future programs. The Portrait is our commitment to our students and families that every student will develop the ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, adapt to challenges, and contribute positively to their community.
Importantly, the Portrait will also anchor Quaker Valley’s strategic work. Each year, it will help frame the District’s comprehensive plan goals, guide curriculum reviews, and shape professional development plans for staff. In this way, the Portrait will be a living vision, directly connected to the daily learning experiences of students and the ongoing growth of our educators.
By developing the Portrait of a Learner, we are affirming Quaker Valley’s long-standing commitment to excellence, innovation, and whole-child education. It is a promise to our students and families. A Quaker Valley education prepares learners not just for graduation, but for a lifetime of success and purpose.
