Parent-Teacher Conference Registration Closes Friday, October 28
Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 12:00-8:00 PM and Friday, November 4, 2016 from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Online conference registration opens on Monday, October 17 at 6:00 a.m. and closes on Friday, October 28 at 11:59 p.m. To register for a conference, visit www.myconferencetime.com/qvms.
ERB Testing / Modified Schedule: October 24-28
October 24-28 is the middle school’s window for ERB testing for the 7th graders. The school will follow a modified schedule, which allows for a one hour window at the beginning of the day for ERB testing to be completed. 6th and 8th graders will use this time to cover a variety of topics ranging from career development and building resiliency, to STEM challenges and presentations on Parkway Career Center and the 8th grade field trip.

Halloween Dance & Movie Night - October 28
A Halloween Dance & Movie Night will be held on Friday, October 28 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Middle School Gym. Costumes are optional. No masks or weapons are permitted. Admission is $5. Unlimited ice cream is $5, or pay $3 per scoop.
QVMS Giving Tree Program
The Middle School is excited to tell you that this year we will be hosting our 3rd Annual QVMS Giving Tree program. The Giving Tree is a Middle School based program to fulfill the wishes of QVMS families who need a little bit of extra support during the holiday season. The Giving Tree will be on display in the lobby of the middle school starting on conference days, November 3 & 4. Families can choose to participate in this program as a “wish fulfiller” or a “wish recipient.” Wish Lists can be filled out online here. QVMS strongly believes in protecting the privacy of our families. Information regarding participation in the QVMS Giving Tree is highly confidential. Studio Life Art Club meets on Mondays after school at QVMS
Who: Any student in 6th-12th grade
What: Art Club-Studio Life!
Where: Middle School Art Room
When: Mondays, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
The Studio Life Art Club is a free after school program that allows students to create art in a studio environment. Sign ups take place outside the Middle School Art Room. Please contact Art teacher Ms. McClelland with any questions at email@example.com. Each student will need a signed Parent Permission Slip and Student Contract, available in the art room! A representative from Parkway Career & Technical Center will be presenting to all 8th grade students in the MS auditorium on Tuesday 10/25 from 7:50 am to 8:50 a.m.
After-School Homework Club
Quaker Valley Middle School provides after school homework support via a “Homework Club” program. The program is run by Mrs. Tracy Shaffer on the dates and times listed below. If your child struggles to complete homework or just needs a little extra time at school to get work completed, they are invited to attend Homework Club. If your child is a car-rider or bus-rider, parents/guardians are responsible for picking up their child from Homework Club in a timely fashion.
Time: 3:00 – 4:00 PM
Dates: October 18, 20, 25, 27; November 1, 8, 10, 15, 17, 29; December 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20 Additional dates will be scheduled after the new year.
8th Grade Trip First Payment Due
The Quaker Valley Middle School will be taking the 8th grade class to Gettysburg, Washington D. C. and Williamsburg. The dates for this year’s trip are May 17, 18, 19, and 20, 2017. The cost of the trip will be around $440.00 (give or take $10). Permission slips and a payment schedule were passed out to the students during homeroom on September 9. The payment schedule will be based on three installments. Checks should be made out to the Quaker Valley Middle School. The payments schedule is:
$150.00 due the week of October 11-14, 2016
$150.00 due the week of January 17-20, 2017
$140.00 due the week of March 6-10, 2017
Our goal is to take every eighth grader who wants to go. If you are interested in making a donation for students that may need financial assistance or if you have any questions or needs, please contact Mr. Slencak or Mr. Kelly.
Club BEST meets on Wednesdays after school
Club BEST is a group that meets to investigate ideas through science and engineering. Any student interested in competing in engineering challenges, investigating crime scenes through forensic science, learning more about NASA missions, or just tinkering with scientific ideas is encouraged to attend weekly after school on Wednesdays until 4:30 p.m. If interested, see Mrs. Shaffer for details and a permission slip.

Odyssey of the Mind Parent Information Meeting - October 25 at Osborne
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition for students of all ages. Students form teams of 5-7 members under the supervision of an adult coach. They select one of five problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Teams create a solution and present their solution within an 8-minute time limit at the Western PA Regional competition, and possibly the state and world level. Anyone interested in creating a team, coaching, or getting detailed information about Odyssey of the Mind should attend a parent information meeting on Tuesday, October 25 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Osborne Elementary Large Group Room. view flyer
Parkway West Career Exploration Day for 8th Graders - November 7
This informational session will inform students of the vocational and technical career majors offered to QV students in grades 9-12. Any interested 8th grade student will have the opportunity to attend a half-day career exploration day, at Parkway, the morning of November 7th, from 8:00-10:30 am.
8th Grade Science Field Trip Opportunity - November 15
Nineteenth Century English scientist, Michael Faraday, was a pioneer who worked to establish much of what we know today about the physics and chemistry of electricity. Pittsburgh honors him yearly by hosting a lecture – demonstration program for students in hopes of sharing his love and enthusiasm for doing science with others. This year the program is entitled: Weird Science on Energy and Fuel, presented by Dr. Lee Marek of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mrs. Shaffer will be overseeing a fieldtrip to Soldiers and Sailors Hall on November 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. for any 8th grade student interested in attending this science based program. Students will be responsible for any missed work on that day but are encouraged to attend if they have any interest or passion in the field of science. All permission slips must be turned in by September 30. Slots will be filled on a first come first served basis.
